Spring chicken, and a giveaway!

As many of you know, blogging can lead to some surprises. Most importantly, I've found it to be a creative outlet that I clearly needed but didn't know I needed. It's also introduced me to a wonderful international community of like-minded, food-obsessed folks that I have found to be nothing but welcoming and warm, when all you hear about the Internet is that they're creeps.

Perhaps most surprising of all to me is that it has led to some freebies!

For one thing, cookbooks. I have two at home that were sent to me recently that I'll be reviewing for you shortly. For another, sometimes people contact you to do a giveaway.

Not long ago, a nice lady named Jessica contacted me from a company called CSN. CSN runs all sorts of websites to meet all kinds of needs. From dog beds to corner tv stands, you're covered. They run the website cookware.com, which is where I picked my giveaway prize from, natch.

It was tough to choose from so many lovely items, but the one I finally settled on was a 12 x 9.5" Le Creuset baking dish in cobalt blue... this one. Isn't it pretty?

Everyone should have a dish like this, one that can go from oven to table. It's fabulous for lasagnas, gratins, or roasted chicken with honey, cherry tomatoes, and rosemary, which I made earlier in the week.

I've been making this recipe for years. How many? I don't know. Six or seven. It's delicious, a breeze, and works every time. Sometimes I make it for company, sometimes just for us. People love it. Make it! But don't do it with skinless chicken breasts like I know some of you might be thinking. That's ridiculous. The skin gets crispy and brown from the honey and olive oil. Follow the recipe and thank me later. Serve it over rice to soak up all the lovely sauce.

To win this gorgeous baking dish, all you need to do is leave a comment telling me what your favorite thing about spring is. This might be a good way to scare out some of you readers who don't like to comment!  I'm on to you, you know.  Just kidding. I'm a little shy in real life myself.

The best response wins, with the winner announced on Friday, April 16. Good luck!

  4. My favorite thing about spring is the return of color. After the dreary winter, there is nothing better than seeing the colors of grass and trees, flowers and blue skies, not to mention the great colors in spring fashions. It's all such a great contrast to the grey winter.

  5. The sound of lawnmowers in the neighborhood, the smell of fresh-cut grass, the colors of new blooms, the sounds of the kinds playing outside at dusk. The sun on my skin again.

  7. Hmmm, there is a toss up between the flowers starting to sprout and the smell of our grill all lit up waiting for use after 6 months. That chicken looks killer. I wish we had access to fresh veggies year round :(

  8. Would it be nepotism or croneyism for me to win? I hope not, because I covet Le Creuset. My mom tells me I can get lots of free Le Creuset cookery if I just "do the right thing" vis a vis the long-term live-in boyfriend. Anyway - we have two entries: via Evan "fiddlehead ferns, because they're pretty and you can eat them." And from me: finally feeling like each day has endless possibilities and sticking my nose in every blooming flower I pass.

  9. The best thing about spring? The smell of hyacinths. They are the quintessential smell of springtime and the only flower you can really smell from afar and through the air. That smell is the best aspect of springtime because it is so sweet.

  10. Marvelous dish and congratulations to you for your fabulous blog creating new opportunities for you! My favorite thing about spring probably has to be the anticipation of watching the garden start to sprout. Finding those first few little greens peeking up from the soil and wanting to baby them until they're OK to grow on their own -- it's a great way to get close to the food that will hopefully reach your table!

  11. My favorite thing about spring is THE END OF WINTER. After spending two and a half weeks in the US where everything is in bloom, we're back home in Belgium where spring is just beginning. We get TWO SPRINGS this year! What's better than that?

Well, maybe this chicken dish. This looks like something we prepare with rabbit. But it's skinless, so maybe I"ll have to do it next time with chicken. Thanks!

  14. Okay, I am trying hard for the Le Crueset baking dish...My favorite part about Spring is that fruit martinis and mojitos start topping the list for our enjoyment....The vegetables are planted, and the herbs are replenished and cut back for new growth. The farmer markets come back to life, and I am usually feeling reenergized and feeling the need to clean out my clostes and reorganize my life.

  15. Don't know if I'm eligible in France, and it's not like I really *need* another baking dish, but I was just talking with a friend last night about Spring, and how it completely changes the whole vibe in Paris. Everyone's out on café patios, and everywhere you go suddenly feels more convivial and neighborhood-y.

  16. This chicken recipe is a family favorite. Only the pickiest people do not like it!! And it is very pretty to serve.

Spring is the gurgle of melting snow under the last ice patch. It is a high sky of sunshine streaming on bouncy yellow daffodils and rainbow hued tulips. It is green leaves shaking in soft rain while apple trees blossom like popcorn.

  19. What a wonderful spring recipe! Do you think it would work with dark meat? We're definitely thigh-lovers at our house. Spring is my favorite season cuz the weather is finally starting to warm up and I'm just getting over being depressed that the holidays are over!

  20. I like spring because its the only time I can find wild asparagus - its also the beginning of mushroom season...

  21. mmm, that chicken looks delicious! those cherry tomatoes for some reason have me captivated...

  22. Because I am trashy - I love the deep fried asparagus at the Ferry Building Saturday Farmer's Market. Also, in California - it has to be the wildflowers!!

  23. I am going to go against the 'flowers and grass and birds' grain here and say my favorite part about spring is the thunderstorms. It is honestly one of my favorite times to spend all day in the kitchen. I crack open the windows so I can hear the rain and the thunder and spend all day baking bread or roasting a chicken, something warm and comforting.

The bonus is the next day when it smells like fresh rain and everything is green and vibrant.

The chicken looks delicious Hungry Dog!

  25. Love that chicken. My favorite spring thing? Depends where I am. In SF: the heady scent of sweet peas at the farmers' market, skinny new asparagus, and the first strawberries. In Charlottesville: Dogwood trees, the explosion of pink and white blossoms that look like lovely upturned faces. Nashville? Wee little green frogs popping out of Cheekwood's water garden. And Jersey: When the ice starts to melt and dark purple crocuses push their secret little heads up out of the snow, and my German neighbors make rhubarb meringue tart...

  26. Oh my, I feel like having this with your ham chowder! Yummm....

  27. Favorite spring thing? Probably the combination of the farmer's market stalls filling up with new vegetables and fruits, topped with the extra cheer-y people who all seem to have an extra "spring" in their step.

I think that I will have to make this chicken dish tonight, it looks delicious.

  28. Oh, my goodness, a freebie Le Creuset! So cute! Last weekend I was just talking about wanting to invest in one of their baking dishes and Dutch ovens but lacking the funds to do so anytime soon. Sigh . . .

My favorite spring thing is the burst of new life in all its sights and sounds. The delicate fall of cherry blossoms. The amorous song of courting birds. The appearance of spring onions, asparagus, fresh herbs--all calling to be baked or roasted in a beautiful blue Le Creuset dish!

    Cheers,
    Anna
